Tips for Tenants

Suggestions for Tenants

Before signing a rental agreement call the City of Forest Grove Utilities Department and ask how much the previous tenants paid in utility bills. Unless the previous tenants used an abnormal amount of energy, this is a good way to know what to expect in utility usage charges. 503-359-3221.

Make sure you have a written rental agreement and that you read it carefully and understand the terms prior to signing a lease.

Know whether or not you are responsible for the entire rent if a roommate moves out.

The best housing is available early. If you wish to retain your house or apartment for the next academic year but will not live in Forest Grove for the summer, check with your landlord to see if sub-letting the house for the summer is possible.

Know your rights and duties as a tenant. Obtain any special arrangements with your landlord or changes to the lease in writing. For comprehensive information read Renter's Rights: The Basics by Attorney Janet Portman and Marcia Stewart.

If you rent through a property manager call the Better Business Bureau to do a "reference check" on your landlord. 503-226-3981.

If you rent through an independent landlord ask them to provide you with a reference.

If you have any rental concerns, contact the Housing Info line of Oregon at 503.223.8197.
